KUCHING: A great leader is someone who knows when to bring about change, introduce something new through their politics of development while at the same time able to change the mindset of the people to face new development challenges.
Stating that Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was such a leader, Senior Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh yesterday said the chief minister had advocated development and brought about changes to the state when he took office.
Citing the example of the implementation of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Wong who is also Second Finance Minister said the corridor, being the state’s new wave of development, would propel the state to a higher level of development and catapult the people to become high income earners.
“When Taib became chief minister in 1981, he advocated the Politics of Development.
“He has brought about great changes to the state. His feat in bringing physical, economic and social development is remarkable.
“He has brought economic and social development conducive for all to conduct their business activities here,” said Wong when delivering his speech at a high-tea at Four Points by Sheraton here.
Among those attending the function organised for some 700 hawkers and family members of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) area of jurisdiction were Taib and MBKS mayor Dato James Chan who hosted the event.
Wong, a minister in charge of MBKS, also mentioned that the chief minister had aspired to develop towns and cities in the state to bring about a better quality of life.
On this, he advised all councils particularly councils of Kuching to try their best to create a better living environment for all the people to work and live in.
“MBKS is trying its best to turn Kuching into a better city – a city of grace, a city of culture, a city with soul for all the people. The councils are now all out to create a better environment, a city where all communities can bond together and live harmoniously with one another.
“With this, we can have a happier community,” he said.
Chan who spoke earlier, said many people who had never met the chief minister seemed to have a wrong impression of him. Perceiving Taib as a nice person and very casual, he urged the people to look at the SCORE initiative as Taib’s contribution to the state.
He said investors will come in through SCORE, thus creating more jobs for the people. On this, he advised the people and hawkers in particular to look at the bigger picture and support government policies instead of simply protesting.
Chan also advised hawkers to form a committee at each of the market so that it can cooperate and work well with their respective councils to avoid miscommunication and misunderstanding on all matters.
